First Light Fusion CEO Mark Thomas said:
“Today’s announcements from government puts fusion at the heart not just of the UK’s clean energy ambitions, but its nationwide industrial potential and drive for growth. Alongside record £2.5 billion funding already announced in the Spending Review, fusion’s designation as a ‘frontier industry’ is a clarion call, shoring up UK leadership in the global race for commercial fusion.
“We welcome plans to develop a fusion market framework in the UK as well as a UK Fusion Prospectus, ensuring the UK harnesses not just the clean energy powered by fusion, but the immediate jobs, growth and investment our domestic fusion sector underpins.
“Inertial Confinement Fusion remains vital to achieving the UK’s fusion ambitions. As a proven technology that has already produced net Gain in fusion reactions, ICF is being heavily backed by governments across the world. The amplification technology we are pioneering at First Light will be a critical part of the pathway to commercial inertial fusion energy, and therefore UK success.
“At First Light, we are unlocking rapid, low-risk pathways to profitable fusion, setting the standard for commercial deployment. We look forward to working with government to shape and deliver their plans for a world-leading fusion sector here in the UK.”
