Our values
An inclusive and supportive workplace
The First Light Inclusion Committee started in the summer of 2021. Its goal is to create a supportive and inclusive scientific community for everyone. Inspired by similar groups, we aim to boost the hiring and retention of a diverse group of talented individuals.
There is a well-documented lack of diversity in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) sector, with several different groups severely underrepresented. However, research has shown that an inclusive workforce increases productivity, employee retention and job satisfaction. At First Light, we aim to proactively contribute to building a more equal scientific community.
We promote an inclusive culture and workplace through:
- Monthly committee meetings focusing on company policy, training and culture to improve the experience for everyone working at First Light.
- Visits from external speakers, including leading researchers and leaders and members of other organisations promoting inclusion in STEM.
- Outreach programmes with schools, colleges and universities to encourage young people from all backgrounds to pursue a career in STEM.
“Our sector lacks diversity. We believe that an inclusive team is vital for success. Using diverse skills and ideas is not just right; it makes sense. We are proud to offer a great place for people to grow their fusion careers.”
