Behind First Light Fusion is a team of nearly 100 talented scientists, engineers, technicians and business experts. Our team come from a range of backgrounds but are all united by a passion for realising fusion energy at scale.
In the latest installment of our ‘Meet the Team’ series, we hear from our VP of Commercial and Partnerships, Paul Holligan, about his journey into the fusion sector and what he loves most about being part of the First Light team.
1. What is your role at First Light Fusion?
I’m VP of Commercial and Partnerships, responsible for commercialising our products and capabilities and building the partnerships and consortium that will be essential to making inertial fusion energy a reality. Previously, I led our pulsed power efforts, including the construction of M3, Europe’s largest pulsed power driver.
2. What did you do before FLF, and why did you want to join the team?
Before joining First Light Fusion, I spent 20 years at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, designing, building, and operating large-scale laser facilities. I’ve been in engineering and science for a long time, and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge fusion technology with an ambitious, world-class team was too exciting to pass up.
3. What excites you most about the future of fusion energy?
Fusion is the ultimate challenge with the ultimate reward. It requires the collective efforts of thousands of scientists and engineers, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to create a clean, limitless energy source. Being even a small part of that journey is incredible.
4. What advice do you have for someone interested in working in fusion or physics?
Show your passion for the field, and you’ll find people willing to support you and help you grow. Surround yourself with great people doing great things, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to step into new challenges.
5. When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I love sports, especially golf, football, and the gym, as well as holidays and spending time with family. My wife and three children all have their own hobbies and interests too, so life is always busy!
6. What is your favourite thing about working at First Light?
That’s easy—the people. Working alongside world-class experts, all driven by a shared mission, makes First Light an amazing place to be. The collaboration, ambition, and team spirit are what truly set it apart.
