Oxford, UK; First Light Fusion, the UK’s inertial fusion energy company and a pioneer in machine learning-driven simulation, has announced the sale and shipment of its first consignment of VIPER III velocity amplifiers to the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) via its US distributor, Physics Applications INC., marking a significant commercial milestone for the company and a major advance in hypervelocity testing capability.
VIPER represents a step change in experimental performance, enabling projectile velocities of up to 14 km/s. This capability opens previously unattainable projectile velocities using standard two-stage light gas guns (2SLGGs), delivering performance which has traditionally been limited to large national laboratory facilities.
The systems will support upcoming experiments at TEES, with growing interest from organisations within government, industry, and academia. Applications span space science, defence research, and advanced materials science, where extreme‑velocity impact conditions provide critical insight into material behaviour and system resilience.
On the sale, Dr Tim Ringrose, First Light Fusion, Lead Scientist – Product Development, said: “This shipment marks an important transition from technology development to real‑world deployment. Reaching this point required an exceptional effort across the team, taking VIPER from concept, to prototype, and now to a commercial product which we’re excited to see in use by a leading research facility at Texas A&M University.”
Texas A&M University professor Thomas Lacy, Director of the TEES Hypervelocity Impact Laboratory, added: “In my view, the velocity and pressure amplifiers developed by First Light Fusion have the potential to dramatically expand the achievable projectile velocities using 2SLGGs. This has important implications for research involving micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) impacts to space vehicles/structures, re-entry vehicles, hypersonics, and other applications where ultra-high-rate small particle impacts are a serious concern.
“They will enable cost-effective, reliable, and safe projectile launches which would otherwise be impossible without considerable expense and risk.”
The VIPER III system builds on First Light Fusion’s expertise in high‑velocity launcher technology, providing customers with a compact, repeatable, and scalable solution for hypervelocity testing. As adoption accelerates, First Light Fusion expects further expansion of VIPER’s role in enabling next‑generation experimental research.
This announcement reinforces the UK’s position as a global leader in technologies developed in conjunction with fusion energy innovation and highlights the growing commercial momentum within the industry.
