Fusion power has the potential to provide the ultimate source of green, low-carbon energy. First Light Fusion is working on a novel approach to inertial fusion, where a small high-velocity projectile impacts into a target containing fusion fuel. Targets must harness the energy applied by the projectile and focus it down to create the temperatures and densities required for fusion. In this role, you will help to design these targets.
Fusion targets are highly complex: they need to be manufactured to a high level of precision and they need to operate effectively in extreme environments. This places unique constraints on their design. As the ideal candidate, you will have experience modelling and designing components that are constrained by complex, real-world engineering requirements. While desirable, prior experience working on inertial confinement fusion and/or shock physics is not essential.
